Educational & Cultural Trip to New York

It was yet another fruitful and memorable experience for the 12 Graphic Design concentration students including the Graduates and 3 of their Lecturers to visit New York as part of their academic curriculum from 17th until the 29th of October 2012. The Department proudly says that the trip as a whole turned to be a great time for them to enhance and learn more about the upcoming trends in Graphic Design, get to know about the New York culture, introduced to Post graduate and Specializations in the design as well as in the related fields of study, and most importantly the opportunity to meet the legends in the field of Graphic Design.

Practices are more valuable than years of theoretical study for film makers and actors. The UCB students and the lecturers could grab a lot of information regarding the courses offered in The New York Film Academy was founded on this basic philosophy of “Learning by doing”. The UCB team was lucky to visit The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) and Museum of Modern Art which is the largest art museum in the whole United States with among the most significant art collections. The team could truly explore the most significant practicalities of printing, drawing, sculpture and collage from Guggenheim which has a whole lot of historical importance as well.

As far as the UCB’ens were concerned, the dream come true moment was that they could personally interact with one of the most celebrated graphic designers in the United States, Milton Glaser who was selected for the lifetime achievement award of the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum.

The most significant outcome of the trip was that the Graphic Design Students could take part in a workshop in printmaking, where they experimented with etching techniques; etched line and texture, dry-point line, and they were also introduced to the sugar lift technique. In a nut shell, the trip proved to be a great opportunity for all the Students and lecturers to put what they have learned into practice.

Apart from this, historical, commercial and cultural places and activities were carried out to enrich the group’s knowledge about the US culture and corporate image, such as Statue of Liberty, Madame Tussauds, Time Square, Union Square and Broadway show and also they were exposed to the New Museum (New York), International Center of Photography, Neue Galerie, American Museum of Natural History, AIGA and Cooper- Union (Typography exhibition).
